A 40-year-old man accused of setting fire to a couch in the lobby of a Northwest Portland building on Aug. 9 pleaded not guilty today to first-degree arson.
Raymond Wayne Aguilera was seen on videotape striking matches to a couch on the first floor of an apartment building at 2284 N.W. Everett St. Earlier, two witnesses had told Aguilera, who is homeless, to leave the building, and he refused, according to court documents. They told authorities that Aguilera then said, "Hey, you guys wanna see a magic trick," and started a fire, which one of the witnesses tried to put out with a glass of water.
